The young boy crouches with a favourite toy in a cradle he has outgrown. A mother figure hovers over him, and all around him are things his family has relegated to the basement: a pogo stick, a fan, lamps, a golf umbrella, a cuckoo clock, pieces of wallpaper and foam…
This painting, with its fluid forms, is my exploration of memories both conscious and unconscious. The myriad resonances of childhood live on powerfully in the adult at a depth usually too subtle to recall. It is an “enchantment” both in the sense of a wondrous or magical quality and of imprisonment (as in the prince was enchanted in the form of a frog).
